Level up with Economics
If you’ve ever spent a Sunday night staring at a mountain of receipts, wondering if your side hustle is actually making money or just keeping you busy, you aren’t alone. The “hustle” is often sold as a path to freedom, but without the right data, it can feel like a second job with a really confusing boss.
That’s exactly why I built the Gig Economy Dashboard (hosted on Replit). I wanted to move past the generic “track your expenses” advice and give solopreneurs a legitimate economic command center.
The Problem: The “Gut Feeling” Gap
Most gig workers and entrepreneurs rely on their gut. “I think this client is worth it.” “I feel like I’m making progress on this project.” The problem is that our brains are hardwired for bias. We fall for the Sunk Cost Fallacy (staying with a losing project because we’ve already put time into it) and we struggle with Opportunity Cost (forgetting that saying ‘yes’ to a low-paying task is a ‘no’ to a high-paying one).
The Solution: Behavioral Economics in Your Pocket
This dashboard isn’t just a calculator; it’s a suite of behavioral economics tools designed to help you make rational decisions.
Here are a few of the “anchors” in the dashboard:
- The Bad Client Calculator: Not all revenue is created equal. This tool runs a “vibe check” on your clients by factoring in communication overhead, payment delays, and stress levels. It tells you exactly who is profitable and who is a “resource drain.”
- The Effective Hourly Rate (EHR) Calculator: Most of us fall into the “Freelancer’s Trap.” You bill a client $100/hour and think, “I’m doing great.” But once you factor in the four hours of unpaid admin, the two hours spent chasing the lead, and your self-employment taxes, that $100 quickly shrinks. If your EHR is lower than a standard W-2 wage, it’s a data-driven signal that it’s time to raise your rates or automate your admin.
- Revenue Target Alignment: Setting a goal like “I want to make $10k this month” is a dream. Making it happen is a strategy. This tool uses Backwards Engineering to see if your goals actually fit into your calendar. It starts with your desired lifestyle cost to find your “break-even” number. The Reality Gap: If hitting your goal requires a 90-hour work week, the tool highlights the “misalignment” before you burn out. It tells you exactly when you need to pivot to higher-ticket offers to reach your targets.
Why Tech Matters for the Solopreneur
I chose to build this on Replit because the gig economy moves fast. We don’t need clunky desktop software; we need lightweight, cloud-based tools that can be updated and accessed from anywhere.
By automating the “boring” stuff—like splitting taxable income for specialized services or tracking mileage efficiency—the dashboard frees up your brain for the “big” stuff: growing your business and mastering the Science of Worth.
Stop Hustling, Start Analyzing
The shift from a “worker” to a “business owner” happens the moment you start treating your time like a finite, high-value asset. Whether you’re a delivery driver, a consultant, or a creative, you deserve a dashboard that works as hard as you do.
